American Business Machines Offers Hope for the Homeless

“One in five children know the pain of hunger … and in some Houston neighborhoods it’s more than that.”

At American Business Machines, we believe in doing our part to help those in need right here in our community. On Friday, August 18th, we put this philosophy into action as sponsors of the Sugarland Skeeters “Night of Hope” event – benefiting Star of Hope Mission in Houston.

About Star of Hope

For 110 years, Star of Hope has sought to end homelessness one life, one family at a time. They do more than offering a place to stay and food to eat. This organization seeks to get to the underlying cause. They have developed programs and partnerships designed to transform the lives of individuals and families experiencing homelessness so they can rise above poverty, become gainfully employed and establish independence.

The Face of Hope

KHOU interviewed someone special who would be impacted by the event. Trishten Mcafee, age 12, delivered the first pitch at the game on Friday. As any kid would be, he was excited to watch his first professional baseball game at field level, but more than that he was nervously excited about how this game would impact the Star of Hope. Tristan has lived at the shelter for a year and a half with his mom and looks forward to the day when they can move into their own apartment.

Changing Lives Together

Giving back to the community, especially to children and families experiencing homelessness, changes lives. If we all come together, we can make a big impact. And you might just find that it’s more than their lives being changed – yours will be too!
